“Emergencies usually come without warning – when they strike, lives can change in an instant,” said Australia for UNHCR CEO Trudi Mitchell.
“UNHCR’s teams are often among the first to respond, bringing life-saving aid and protection to people who have lost everything. Giving Day is about ensuring that help can keep reaching families, wherever and whenever a crisis occurs.”
For 24 hours only, every donation made to Australia for UNHCR’s Emergency Response Giving Day appeal will be matched dollar for dollar by a generous supporter, doubling the impact for refugees and displaced families around the world.
Funds raised through the campaign will support UNHCR’s emergency response work, which requires flexible, rapid funding to respond to new or escalating crises.
Donations allow UNHCR to pre-position essential supplies, deploy emergency specialists, and deliver immediate support such as shelter, water, and healthcare.
“In recent years, we’ve seen humanitarian needs reach record levels, with more people displaced by conflict, violence and disaster than ever before,” Ms Mitchell said.
“The need for timely, flexible funding has never been greater. Every dollar donated on Giving Day will go twice as far in helping UNHCR protect families caught in crisis.”
The campaign will run from midday Tuesday 21 October to midday Wednesday 22 October (AEDT), with matched donations available for 24 hours only.
Donations can be made online at unrefugees.org.au/giving-day.
