Leading educator joins Australia for UNHCR board

Australia for UNHCR has officially welcomed former refugee and Unity Grammar Chief Executive Dr Sayd Farook to its board.

Dr Farook has a strong connection to UNHCR’s work, having come to Australia as a refugee.

“When you leave your entire life and forcibly seek refuge in a new place it is as if death has overtaken you. You lose everything and you have to start all over again,” Dr Farook said.

“I moved to Australia with no background, no networks, no money, nothing. I had to make something of myself.”

Since then, Dr Farook has achieved an extraordinary amount in his career.

He is currently the Chief Executive of Unity Grammar, an independent K-12 Islamic college in Sydney’s south-west.

Previously, Dr Farook was Head of Group Strategy at the Crescent Group. He also served as Strategy Advisor at The Executive Office of the Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for five years.

His impressive qualifications include a PhD in the intersection of Behavioural Economics and Ethical Banking, as well as degrees in business and law.

Australia for UNHCR Chairman Michael Dwyer said it is a great privilege to have Dr Farook on the board.

“Not only does Dr Farook have a strong commitment to the work of Australia for UNHCR, but he personally understands the hardships refugees face and the incredible contribution they can make to society when given the chance,” Mr Dwyer said.

Dr Farook has been a key supporter of Australia for UNHCR’s Islamic Philanthropy program and was instrumental in setting up UNHCR’s Refugee Zakat Fund, where Muslims can donate their Zakat (religious tax) to people displaced from their homes.

“Dr Farook’s expertise, background and passion for helping refugees will be a valuable addition to our board,” said Australia for UNHCR CEO Trudi Mitchell.

Dr Farook said he feels privileged to support the work of UNHCR.

“UNHCR is at the forefront of providing opportunity to refugees. The return on investment in refugees is so transformative, you’re enabling people to leap from ground zero,” Dr Farook said.
